Model of gum disease from poor oral hygieneTooth decay isn’t the only threat to your oral health. Gum disease can affect both your mouth and body. Although the infection is preventable, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates at least 50% of adults have it. While the early signs may not be alarming, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. Thankfully, your dentist can combat the infection and save your smile with antibiotic therapy. Here’s how Arestin has revolutionized treating gum disease.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection caused by poor oral hygiene habits. Bacteria found in plaque and tartar buildup can irritate and infect the gum tissue. The initial signs are red, swollen, and bleeding gums. The first stage is gingivitis, which can be treated without causing long-term damage to your smile. However, if the infection progresses to periodontitis, it can lead to tooth loss as the infection destroys the supporting structures of your teeth. The harmful oral bacteria can also enter your bloodstream, increasing your risk of serious health concerns, like cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Treating Gum Disease with Antibiotic Therapy

Traditionally, gum disease therapy begins with a deep cleaning, which involves two separate procedures to remove tartar and smooth the root surfaces. This method is effective in treating the infection, but now your dentist can give you another layer of defense to restore your gum health.

Arestin is an antibiotic known to fight periodontitis, which occurs when gingivitis progresses in severity. Arestin consists of tetracycline to target the infection. When used along with other periodontal treatments, like scaling and root planing it can reduce inflammation, receding gums, and loose teeth by targeting the infection before it worsens.

Your dentist will fill the pockets between your gums and teeth with Arestin powder using a special application process after a deep cleaning has been conducted. It will absorb over the next several days, allowing the medication to reach areas your dentist can’t. You’ll have to avoid crunchy or hard foods for a few days. You’ll also be advised to skip dental floss or picks at the beginning of your treatment plan. Depending on your situation, you may need to have the procedure repeated every few weeks.

As with any antibiotic, there are potential complications, like an allergic reaction. In rare cases, it can cause tooth and gum pain, increased tooth sensitivity, and a headache. Any side effects won’t linger, unlike the effects of untreated gum disease.

Is Arestin Right for Me?

Your dentist will review your medical history to determine if Arestin is right for you. Besides any allergies, it’s important to tell your dentist if you have a weakened immune system, unusual sores or patches in your mouth, and conditions or medications that can cause oral sores, like radiation or chemotherapy.

Your dentist will create the personalized plan you need to save your smile from gum disease. Schedule an appointment to restore your gum health.
