What is a HEPA Air Filter and What Does It Do?

Especially during these uncertain times, it’s important that you take every measure you can to stay healthy. By doing things like wearing a face covering, limiting your public outings, and frequently cleaning commonly touched surfaces, you’re protecting yourself and others from becoming ill. But, how can HEPA air filters help? Your safe dentist in Medford shares how.

What is a HEPA Filter?

HEPA is an acronym for “high efficiency particulate air.” It is a filter that can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and other airborne particles. It was first developed in the 1940s for use in facilities that contained nuclear materials. They helped to trap any radioactive dust or particles that could have potentially spread through air ducts. By the 1960s, HEPA found their way to consumer markets.

What Are the Benefits of HEPA Air Filters?

They filter air so it is safer and more comfortable for you to breathe. HEPA air purifiers:

  • Help to prevent asthma attacks: There are many different particles that can trigger asthma attacks including dirt, dust, carbon monoxide, cleaners, and mold spores. HEPA filters eliminate many of these and reduce the likelihood of an attack.
  • Eliminate allergens: HEPA filters help to remove dust and pollen, which ultimately helps reduce allergies.
  • Trap tobacco smoke: Constantly breathing in tobacco smoke can result in asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, and heart disease. It is especially harmful to children because their lungs are still developing.
  • Eliminate carcinogens in the air: HEPA air filters help to eliminate radon gas and extract airborne asbestos particles. Both of these are known to be carcinogens.
  • Remove outside pollutants: If you live in an urban area, you probably are all too familiar with pollutants like car exhaust that lead to higher rates of asthma and allergies. Even though they can make their way into homes and buildings, these air filters can reduce the pollution through ventilation.
  • Reduce carbon dioxide levels: Breathing in too much carbon dioxide can cause shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness, weakness, nausea, and other issues. Having a HEPA air purifier can reduce carbon dioxide in the air.
  • Traps bacteria: HEPA filters can trap any particles with a diameter that is 0.3 microns or larger.

Why Are Dentists Using HEPA Air Filtration?

Your dentist is taking several new safety protocols, on top of his already strict precautionary measures, to ensure that you are being treated in a safe environment. By using HEPA air filtration, he is able to minimize aerosol contamination and improve the overall air quality so patients can be as protected as possible.

Thanks to modern technology, like HEPA air purifiers, homes and offices can be made safer from contaminants that could potentially cause harm to the body. It is the priority of your dentist to give you an experience where you can have peace of mind.
