Dentures are a popular and effective solution for restoring your smile when you’ve lost multiple teeth. If you’re considering getting dentures, you might be wondering how long the process takes. Well, the exact timeline can vary based on individual circumstances and the type of dentures you choose.

If you’re looking for a general overview of the steps and time involved in getting dentures, continue reading. Below you’ll learn the full denture process and how long it’ll take to receive them.

Step 1: Consultation (1 – 2 Weeks)

The process typically begins with an initial consultation with a dentist or prosthodontist. During this appointment, your oral health will be assessed, and your dentist will discuss your options and preferences regarding the type of dentures that best suit your needs. The time at this stage can fluctuate depending on how quickly you can get an appointment.

Step 2: Preparation and Impressions (2 – 3+ Weeks):

If you decide to proceed with dentures, your dentist may need to make other preparations. Here are some factors that may increase the amount of time you spend in this stage:

  • Extraction: If you need to have teeth extracted, this will add time to your denture treatment as your gums must heal before dentures can be placed. If you have teeth removed it usually takes about a month for your gums to return to normal.
  • Dental Implants: If you choose implant dentures, your dentist will need to perform the surgery and allow time for the implants to heal before proceeding. Implant sites take a bit longer to heal because the post has to integrate with the jawbone, so you could be looking at an additional 8 weeks.

Once you’re ready, your dentist will take impressions and measurements of your mouth. These impressions are sent to a dental laboratory, where the custom dentures will be created. This step can take a few weeks due to the technical skill required to create denture prosthetics and the time required to ship materials.

Step 3: Fitting and Adjustments (1 – 2 Weeks):

When your custom dentures are ready, you’ll have a fitting appointment. Your dentist will ensure that the dentures fit comfortably and securely. You may require follow-up appointments to make any necessary adjustments for the perfect fit, but once you’re happy with them they’re ready to be finalized.

Step 4: Final Dentures (1 – 3 Weeks)

Finalized dentures are sent back to the dental lab to be made. Once they make it through this process, they will be ready to go home with you. If there were no adjustments to be made in the previous step, you may be able to get them earlier, but it’s best to plan for some adjustments to be made.

Overall, the process of getting dentures can take several weeks to a few months, with the exact duration varying based on individual factors and the type of dentures you choose. It’s important to work closely with your dentist to ensure that your dentures meet your specific needs and preferences. Properly fitted dentures can enhance your quality of life and restore your ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.
